My Eleven Favorite Quotes on Writing

photos from Amy's phone 240

I think every writer has a favorite quote about writing. I have eleven. An odd number, I know, but I just couldn’t stop at ten. This week I want to share them with you:

11. “The best time for planning a book is while you’re doing the dishes.” Agatha Christie

10. “A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” Thomas Mann

9. “You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” Saul Bellow

8. “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” Louis L’Amour

7. “Every writer I know has trouble writing.” Joseph Heller

6. “Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don’t feel I should be doing anything else.” Gloria Steinem

5. “Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” Anton Chekhov

4.” Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” E.L. Doctorow

3. “I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide.” Harper Lee

2. “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” W. Somerset Maugham

1. (Okay, so this one isn’t necessarily about writing, but it applies and I love it) “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost

Do you have a favorite quote? It doesn’t have to be about writing. I’d love to hear it.

Until next week,

Amy

P.S. The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor is released in just two weeks, so I’ll be posting more often as I have guest blogs going live. I hope you’ll take some time to visit! 1. Great quotes! I agree with them all! My personal favorite is a quote from Albert Einstein:

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited; imagination encircles the world.”

It’s not specifically about writing, but I love the message about the value of creativity! Thanks for sharing this list! 🙂

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the list. I hadn’t heard that quote from Albert Einstein, but I love it. Thank you for sharing it and thanks for stopping by!

  2. My favourite quote on writing is from Mordecai Richer: Fundamentally, all writing is about the same thing. It’s about dying, about the brief flicker of time we have here, and the frustration it creates.

And I’m very happy you continued and added #11, because that’s when I do my best writing!

    1. That’s a beautiful quote–thanks for sharing it!

I’d love to be able to say I do my best writing when someone else is doing the dishes for me, but alas, I’m usually the one slogging away at the sink. What better time to create my own world?

  3. Good Morning Amy,

I love #1 as well… and definitely agree with #9, Many years ago I taught Religious Education, and some of my best lessons came in the middle of the night. And, I can’t tell you how many times I had wished I had not been so lazy, and got up to write something down… “darn what was that thought, it sounded so good last night”, LOL…

Oh,and one of my favorites is from Forrest Gump… “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”.

As Always, “Keep Reading and Writing”.

    1. Ah, the wisdom of Forrest Gump. That’s a good quote to remember! And I feel your pain about not getting up to write things down in the night. When I just lie there thinking and worrying, I find that I’m stressed out in the morning trying to remember everything.

I really should have included “Keep Reading and Writing” as one of my favorites!! I look forward to it every week.
