This is the first year since 1998 I haven’t gone out trick-or-treating with my kids. My husband took my son out, but my daughter (the one who isn’t in college) stayed home with me to hand out candy to the two children who came to our door. We live on a block that tends to be quite dark, so we don’t get too many trick-or-treaters.
My plan while waiting for the doorbell to ring was to continue working on my current novel (Book 3 in the Malice series), but then I remembered my blog. Yes, this one.
I have a few ideas in reserve for my blog for those nights (like tonight) when the need to write a post sneaks up on me, but I wasn’t ready to tackle those yet. So I came up with the next-best thing:
Halloween Candy and Wine Pairings
Genius, right?
Now, I know not all of you drink wine. If you avoid alcohol, then my advice is to drink milk or water with your candy. I always find water goes well with sweet things. And milk with anything chocolate is just a classic.
But for those of you who do enjoy a glass of wine now and then, take my advice and enjoy a piece of candy (or two, or a dozen) with your drink. Here are my favorite highly unscientific pairings, starting with my two favorite types of Halloween candy and then in no particular order after that:
KitKat: Pinot noir
Mounds: Cabernet Sauvignon
Hershey: Temperanillo
Twix: Sauvignon Blanc
Skittles: Vinho Verde
peanut butter cup: Chardonnay
Almond Joy: Syrah
Mary Janes: throw them out
Please let me know what you think of my pairings and I hope you’ll add some of your own suggestions in the comments below. By the way, if you’re interested in trying some new wines, I have lists and suggestions on both my website (click here) and the “Wines” page of my blog (click here). I invite you to check them out and explore!
Until next week,
Amy
I think chocolate and a hearty red wine are perfect pairings. Good job here!

Love this post, Amy. I like ice water with chocolate. I’m a bit tired tonight or I’d have a lot more to say on the subject, given that my father and uncle made wine 🙂

I was actually thinking about water today, and how I like it with ice cream, too. I think it cuts the sweetness a bit. My husband and I have a box of juice in the house waiting to be made into wine, but we haven’t found the time to figure it out yet. One of these days…

I’d enjoy any of the above wines. Chocolate not so much and not candy. Does that make me boring?

Not at all! There are days when I wish I didn’t enjoy chocolate and other sweets. I’m jealous! Have a great day and thanks for dropping in. 🙂

An inspired post by Amy Reade Chocolate and Wine pairings.. I tend to have milk with mine or coffee if before the sun is over the yard arm.. but I must admit to enjoying after dinner mints with a Baileys…or port.. what a pity it is still only breakfast time.. thanks Amy

Great post Amy. I do love wine, but gotta say, it’s coffee or tea for me with chocolate. 🙂

Despite having a story in the upcoming anthology, 50 Shades of Cabernet, I’m a teetotaler. I like coffee or tea with my candy.

I think I would like both tea and coffee with chocolate, but I’m not sure I would drink them with any other kind of candy. I’ve been hearing a lot about 50 Shades of Cabernet. I’d like to get a copy of it!

I never “pair” a sweet drink with a sweet food. Overload!
50 Shades comes out on Mar. 1. Pre-orders probably start in Jan.

So funny. I suppose Pinot Noir would go with Heathbars as well. This is a great way to polish off the unused candy!

Great idea! I never even thought of Heath bars– I love them!

P.S. and I will trade you the Mary Janes for the Skittles… I don’t like skittles!

Deal. I like Skittles. I really prefer chocolate, but Skittles will do nicely in a pinch. 🙂

Well now, I am not a drinker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to pair my candy! With every piece of candy I eat, chocolate or otherwise… like licorice and candy corn…. I will pair it with another piece of candy just like it! Oh, and then so I don’t gain too much weight, I will drink diet root beer! 🙂 So now, it’s on to November; where has the year gone?
Have a wonderful week, and don’t forget to “Keep Reading and Writing”!

That’s funny! Your comment reminds me of something my aunt used to say whenever she ate something she liked: “that tastes like another one!”
Good call with the diet root beer. Also, I’m pretty sure if you eat candy standing up, that cancels out some of the calories, too.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy November!
