Book Lovers’ Tag

Waaay back in October author and blogger Diana Peach published a blog called “A Book Lover’s Tag” (you can read it here) and I’ve been eager to play the game. Below is a list of questions in the game of Book Lover’s Tag. I encourage you to consider yourself tagged if you want to play! Just leave your responses in the comments below. And, like Diana, I will compile a list of favorite books and post it at a later date. Enjoy!

Do you have a specific place for reading?

No. I will read anywhere and everywhere. I’ve read in doctors’ offices, hospitals, schools, cars, buses, my bed, my couch, my desk, the patio, the beach, the pool, other people’s houses, parking lots, libraries, and the list goes on and on. You get the point.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Yes! I use anything at hand, whether it’s a bookmark or any piece of paper. I’ve also been known to use candy wrappers, nail files, my Kindle, ribbon, pens, etc.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

Not usually. I don’t want to get drips or spills on what I’m reading.

Music or tv while reading?

No! The only time I can tolerate that is when I’m in the car (as a passenger, not the driver!) and the rest of the occupants vote for music. Even then, I can only read magazines, not books.

One book at a time or several?

Several. Usually three.

Do you prefer to read at home or elsewhere?

I prefer to read at home, but I’ll read anywhere.

Read out loud or silently?

Silently, unless I’m reading non-fiction and it’s something I need to remember.

Do you read ahead or skip pages?

I try not to, but sometimes I just can’t bear to wait to see what happens next.

Break the spine or keep it like new?

I would love to keep my books like new, but I always end up breaking the spine. Well-used books are well-loved books.

Do you write in books?

Not usually.

What books are you reading now?

Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers, Fifty Shades of Cabernet (a mystery anthology), and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

What is your childhood favorite book?

That depends on what part of childhood you’re talking about. By the time I was eight I loved the Nancy Drew mysteries and I remember those very fondly. I also loved The Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

What is your all-time favorite book?

I would say it’s a three-way tie: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. And, of course, I love anything by Phyllis Whitney (my favorite is Black Amber) and M.C. Beaton, author of the Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth series.

Tag, you’re it!

Until next time,

Amy

  1. I love learning more about my friends – and we don’t ask each other enough these very PERSONAL questions. Like you, my favorite place to read is in my own home, on my comfy chair, feet up on the ottoman, eyes and mind focused on the book. I can’t read in the car (focus, and motion sickness!). My second favorite place to read is on a lounge chair while sitting in front of my favorite ocean (yes, OC,NJ, or Kauai). We have a lot in common, my friend! 🙂
Diana’s blog post sharing these reading insights is wonderful. Thanks to you two, I have a special insight to what makes my blogging friends ‘tick.’

    1. These are my favorite kinds of posts–where we learn little tidbits about each other. Diana’s post was great and I hope you’ll consider doing the Book Lover’s Tag on your own blog! Thanks for dropping in!

    1. I’ve always been able to read anywhere, I think because I get bored so easily. I can’t just sit and have nothing to read. And I wish I could stop skipping ahead, but I just can’t! Thanks for dropping in and have a great day!

  2. Do you have a specific place for reading?

Yes, most of my reading is done in my bedroom. I have a comfy chair that overlooks my front yard. It’s on the second floor so when the sun rises, It’s beautiful. I also enjoy an indoor garden that always makes me smile.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I mostly use bookmarks when reading paperbacks. My grandchildren love crafts and have made me many bookmarks. I also receive them from authors, occasionally so I always have plenty at arms length. But most of my reading is done on my kindle app or audible for my audiobooks.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

Yes, always… along with my bookmarks at arms length, I also have a candy bin! And my health requires me to drink 3 quarts of liquids a day. So I always keep something to drink close by. Of course, I never reach the 3 quarts… that is just insane, I would end up doing my reading in the bathroom! 😊

    Music or tv while reading?

No! My concentration is terrible, I would have to read the chapters over and over!

One book at a time or several?

Usually two, one on my kindle/or a paperback, and one on my audible. And sometimes
If I am having trouble concentrating because the book is intense, I will add a cozy to balance it. 😊

Do you prefer to read at home or elsewhere?

Definitely home, If I am elsewhere, it’s for a reason and I can’t read.

    Read out loud or silently?

Mostly silently. Sometimes when I start a book and I find myself rereading the first couple of pages, I will read the first chapter out loud. It helps me to block my roaming mind and get a grasp on what the author is trying to tell me.

Do you read ahead or skip pages?

Never read ahead! I sometimes want to, but I am very disciplined!

Break the spine or keep it like new?

    Keep it like new,

    Do you write in books?

Sometimes, I will come across something I don’t understand, but I am not ready to look it up yet. I will highlight it and go back. Or if it’s a topic I want to research, I will write my question and tag the page. And sometimes, if it’s something I want to include in my review, I will highlight it. Or sometimes I may have a question for the author. So I guess my answer is yes, I write in books.

What books are you reading now?

Just finished The Castle of Otranto, by Horace Walpole, about to start The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

What is your childhood favorite book?

Well, Unfortunately, I only read what the schools made me read. I was too busy playing in the yard. Not quite sure when my love for reading started, but I am glad it did.

What is your all-time favorite book?

I don’t really have a favorite all-time book. However, I do have favorite authors. When I first started to really love reading, I was hooked on Law and Order, and Detective type books. I read everything James Patterson, and John Grisham wrote. Once I was up to date on their books I began to search for more of these kinds of books. And when I retired, my reading became an obsession, and that is when I began to reach across genres. And I found authors, like Amy Reade, Amy Metz, Mollie Cox Bryan, Susan Fleet and Nancy Lynn Jarvis. And More! I know that you are looking for favorite books, so I will give one for each author. But I will add, that I have enjoyed everything each of these authors has written. And since I have read these authors I have added so many more. Life is good!

Nancy Lynn Jarvis – Mags and AARP Gang
Susan Fleet – The Frank Renzi Series… sorry can’t pick one.
Mollie Cox Bryan – Memory of Light, An Aftermath of Gettysburg.
Amy Metz – Rogues and Rascals, in Goose Pimple Junction.
Amy Reade – Secrets of Halstead House.

    1. Wow! I’m impressed. You’ve got great discipline to always use bookmarks, write in books for reviews, read in your favorite chair, and always have food and drink at hand–but most especially, to refrain from reading ahead!! I’m so glad you enjoy my books and have found so many other authors whose books you love to read. Thanks very much for these responses. I loved reading them. 🙂

  3. I’m so glad you picked up the tag, Amy, and thanks for linking back. I love reading about other people’s reading habits. It makes me want to pick up a book and settle in by the fire. That favorite book question is tough – there are so many good ones. Here are a couple that I loved when I was on my “classics” binge. Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Far from the Maddening Crowd, both by Thomas Hardy. 🙂 Happy Writing!

    1. Both excellent books! I was afraid the post wouldn’t link back to you, so I’m glad you found it. I, too, love learning about other people’s reading habits. Thanks for tagging all your followers!

    1. The Babysitter’s Club series was a little later, so I never read those. My daughters have read them, and they enjoyed those books, too. I love the name Much Ado about Little Women–my sister and I were both named after characters in that book!
